【InnoVEX 2024 Pitch Contest Winners: Watasumi (Future Star Award)】

According to research and data from professional facilities, food production has large environmental impacts, including certain percentages of global greenhouse gas emissions. Watatsumi, the Future Star Award in the InnoVEX 2024 Pitch Contest, is a Japanese startup spun out of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in October 2021!

By converting previously discarded waste into usable energy and clean water, Watatsumi addresses a pressing environmental issue by creating a positive influence on the industry. Also, Watasumi's flagship product, Kappa, is a compact, modular device that utilizes biological filtration integrated with IoT monitoring and remote-control systems that allow users to operate the system without any on-site operators. The technology utilizes Biological Electrochemical Systems (BES) that function similarly to a biological battery to provide sustainable and cost-effective solutions for wastewater management that benefit both the industrial and municipal sectors by reducing environmental impact and operational costs.

The allure of startups is the accelerated success. Less talked about are the failures along the way and what happens afterwards. Jason Portnoy’s story has it all: his fast rise with the legendary “PayPal Mafia”, his sex addiction and finding redemption.

In his new book, Silicon Valley Porn Star (also available in traditional Chinese), the author, entrepreneur and venture capitalist describes those early days at PayPal, whose founding members later started the likes of LinkedIn, Palantir, YouTube and Tesla. He then fell from grace, struggling with sex addiction before embarking on a long climb back.
